    my title now is хатуль мадан
     наконец-то меня повысили. я теперь официально "ученый" (кот), в общем, хатуль мадан. Повышение подкралось незаметно - в виде 12-дюймового шоколадного торта. так что мне его еще доедать. я, правда, поделилась с сотрудниками, но народ нынче хилый, не осилили.
    Так что, если кто хочет чаек с тортиком, то свистите.

    ботинки для беговых лыж
     никому не нужны ботинки для беговых лыж? Размер 41 (9.5), почти новые, with ankle support (good for backcountry), very warm.

    Dessert of the week (week #8) - HausFreunde
     By now I was spoiled by recipes that don't need adjustment and can be cooked straight from the book. This time was very different. I haven't listened to my mother(she insists that separating egg into yolks and whites is not necessary). HausFreunde cake was supposed to be fruit and nut spongecake loaf. By the time when I have mixed yolks, sugar, almonds and cranberries, the mix was consistency of granite. Adding beaten whites didn't help, I just couldn't add flour. I had to think very quickly - I have melted a little bit of butter, mixed in couple more eggs and voila - cake was saved. Needless to say, it haven't risen as it should have, but it tastes good. Damn "Patisserie of Vienna" book!

    Dessert #8 - Mandelbrot
     This week's dessert - German version of Italian biscotti. Small biscotti with finely chopped almonds. I love the recipe, it's easy and simple. There are not many, though. There is no picture because I am lazy (and addicted to Temple Guardian game). Tonight I will drink Polish vishyak and eat Mandelbrot. Ibo nefig...

    Dessert of the week: week #6. Upside down pear tart with cardamom
     According to the legend this upside-down fruit tart (also called Tarte Tatin) was invented by accident by French woman. She have dropped a pan with tart to the floor. Since she didn't have time to make another tart, she have scooped a fruit filling into the pan, added more sugar and butter, tucked in sheet of puff pastry and baked it upside down.
    I have baked this week's dessert with pears. I fried pear halves in butter and sugar syrup with cardamom, then transferred pears to baking pan, covered with puff pastry (Pepperidge Farm) and baked in in oven. My only mistake was to believe a cookbook to eat it warm. Leftovers next morning were much much better! I would like to thank Slonenok, Bober and Enot for help with tart testing and evaluation.

    Dessert of the week: weeks 3,4
     I have missed last week due to the camping. So, naturally, I have to bake two desserts.
    One that I have fed to my co-workers was quite simple: take a sheet of puff pastry, brush some apricot jam on it and put peach slices. Bake 25 minutes. Long live simple desserts! Here it is:

    The second one was much more complicated (but much more flavorful). I made italian sweet dough, cooked apples in cinnamon/cardamom syrup. Then, with my tongue out from excessive effort and diligence I have arranged sticky slices of apples in what was supposed to be an attractive pattern and carved leaves decorations. I have never made a dessert before where crust and filling are cooked separately. It was good! Here it is:

    Anniversary - 15 years in the US
     15 years ago our family landed in JFK airport.
    I cannot even remember now how our Barnaul apartment building looked like. I have never been back.

    Dessert of the week: week #2
     My dessert baking continues: This week it is blueberry frangipane flan. Shortbread crust is combined with almond flan which surrounds blueberries:

    Project "Dessert", week #1
     After watching movie "Julie and Julia", decided to fight my midlife crisis by baking one dessert every Saturday(or Sunday) for one year.
    Conditions:
    I must try new recipes;
    I shouldn't use the same recipes;
    If I can't find somebody to share the dessert, I am going to take it to work.
    Week #1:
    Base - simple sponge cake (biskvit) with blueberry jam/whipped cream filling and whipped cream/berries on the top:

    а вот кому огуречную и др. рассаду?
     Дайте мне лекарство от жадности, и побольше!
    В этом году решила уменьшить огород на балконе. Ага, как же. Забрела в мою голову шальная мысль, что без огурцов на балконе скучно. Помидоры уже посажены. Базилик, всякие там травки посажены. Цветочки в этом году не сажаю. А огуречную рассаду такими пачками продают, как будто американцы их солят на зиму.
    Это все преамбула, а теперь амбула - кто хочет приютить у себя несколько огурчиков-сироток? В приданое могу дать итальянский и пурпурный базилик.

    wireless pizza transfer
     преамбула:
    меня назначили "ученым секретарем". Я раз в месяц заказываю ланч и координирую выступления докладчиков.

    амбула:
    заказала пиццу. из-за отсутствия нескольких мужиков у нас остались две закрытые, не начатые коробки с пиццей и много разнокалиберных кусочков. Я уже потирала лапы, думая о пицце под пиво вечерком. Заглянула через полчаса в кухню - обе коробки все еще закрыты, но пицца из них на 3/4 исчезла. На салат почему-то никто не позарился.

    гипотеза:

    На нашем этаже гнездо ИТ. Наверное, ето wireless pizza transfer. вот гады...

     Smell of New Year tree, cumin and coriander in lamb pilaf - good start to week and a half holiday break. First time in US I bought a fir tree. Today B. and I decorated it. When I was picking ornaments I was returning to my childhood. Every year I would go to the same fir tree ornaments bazaar and pick the cutest ornaments. I would pick four each year - for every member of my family. Now all of them are far away but I bought two polar bears (in a memory of two tree hugging brown bears I once had) for B. and myself.

    Nostalgy, goddamit!

    Первая блондинка:
    - Это что, осенью, что ли, когда индейку жарят и обжираются потом целый день, да?!
    - Плохо, плохо - иди мимо, - отвечает Святой Петр.
    Вторая блондинка, подумавши, предлагает:
    - А я знаю, а я знаю! Это зимой, когда елки ставят и подарки друг другу дарят!!!
    - Пошла вон, - отвечает Святой Петр, и, обращаясь к третьей, предлагает, - давай теперь ты.
    - Пасха, - говорит третья блондинка, - это когда Иисус и его ученики праздновали еврейскую Пейсах, и Иисус превратил вино в кровь, а Иуда его предал, и когда они спали в саду, пришли римляне и его арестовали, а потом его били и распяли на кресте, а потом его с креста сняли, и положили в пещеру, а вход в пещеру завалили камнем, а потом он воскрес!
    - Ну, бля, - все что смог выговорить изумлённый Петр...
    А блондинка продолжает:
    -... и теперь раз в год этот камень отодвигают, и если он вылезет и увидит свою тень - то зима продолжается еще шесть недель....

    I am back
     I came back from London/Paris trip on Sunday. Two weeks of wonderful oblivion. Now I am back to real life :-(
    From trip diary:

    My mother, looking at Buckingam Palace: Наши-то цари побогаче жили.

    Я: Мама, как фунт относится к доллару?
    Мама (экспрессивно): Плохо относится!

    В Париже, после того, как маму обхамили, я ей подняла настроение одной фразой:
    - ой мало мы их в 1812 году били.

    Мама улетела. У меня разболелось застарелое одиночество.

    какой облом
     собирались на выходных залезть на горы Лафает и Линкольн. Готовилась, тренировалась, всем расхвасталась, погоду обещали хорошую. И вдруг к Б. приезжают родственики. И мало того, что никуда не едем, так еще я буду одна все выходные. Облом полный.
    Никто не хочет погулять в окрестностях Бостона? В Мидлэссекс Феллс есть симпатичная тропа на два часа.
